Supporting — and moderating — the Third Culture Film Festival at Soho House
This weekend, a quiet circle closes in Sheung Wan.
From 28–30 August 2026, the Third Culture Film Festival returns to the city where the idea was first conceived a decade ago. The Hong Kong Showcase at Soho House is private and invitation-only film festival within the beautiful cinema room.
Harry Oram, founder and director, was born and raised here. After rebuilding the festival in Tauranga and relaunching it in New Zealand in 2024, he has brought it home as an exchange, not an import. “Hong Kong gave me the idea. New Zealand gave the festival its home.”
Third culture is what happens when people shaped by more than one place stop merely celebrating difference and start asking what they can build together. The films explore identity, belonging, family, resilience, and connection across borders. As Harry writes:
“Cinema has the unique ability to help us see the world through another person’s eyes.”
That is why Andrew Chan FCA is here as a film critic (Film Critics Circle of Australia) and as someone who works in risk. Both jobs ask the same thing: look longer, hold more than one truth, refuse the comfort of a single frame.
Bruce Lee called that discipline be water. Water takes the shape of the room and remains itself. It does not shatter when the container changes. Jeet Kune Do was never about collecting styles. It was about using what is useful, discarding what is not, and staying formless enough to meet the moment.
Hong Kong has always been a third-culture city. Many of us live with more than one passport of the heart. A rigid identity is a risk concentration: it looks strong until the environment changes. A third-culture identity, practised well, is resilience — enough flexibility to adapt without becoming nobody. Cinema trains that muscle.
Be water is not “become whatever the other room wants.” Water still has weight.
Sunday closing: Born to Fly
On 30 August, 7:00–9:00pm, the Showcase closes with Ali Khajeian’s 2026 documentary Born to Fly, followed by a Q&A with Khajeian and ultra runner Rahul Sharma. I will moderate.
The film follows Sharma — Hong Kong-raised, a former U-19 cricketer who wore this city’s colours — as he runs the length of Sri Lanka: 566 kilometres in 6 days, 13 hours and 22 minutes, a world record dedicated to the Children’s Cancer Institute. A Hong Konger who learned one discipline, emptied it, and took another shape. Endurance as third culture. Be water in the body, not only on the poster.
Empty your mind. Be formless. Be water — especially when the story on screen is not your own.
