When the Board Meets the Algorithm
CRO Chief Risk Officer at FinEx Club’s inaugural FSAB meeting, first anniversary, and AI keynote
The Refinery Club, Taikoo Place — 16 July 2026
A first anniversary is usually a toast. This one was a working session.
FinEx Club convened its first formal Financial Strategic Advisory Board (FSAB) meeting on the same night it marked year one. That pairing is the point: if Hong Kong is going to stay a serious financial centre in an agentic-AI decade, risk has to be in the room when strategy is set — not after the deal is signed.
Founder and Chairman Morris Hui opened a year that moved from calendar to infrastructure: a Research Centre (Lawrence Au), a sharper member value proposition (Biswajyoti Upadhyay), and FinEx Academy plus FinEx Consulting (Vincent Huen). Behind that sat real market work — AI with Baker Tilly and IIA Hong Kong, private markets with State Street, tokenisation with Anchorpoint, the Ethereum Foundation and Forvis Mazars. Newly appointed FSAB members received letters and badges. Advisory boards fail when they are decorative. They work when people accept a named mandate.
The sharpest hour belonged to Alfons Futterer of NanomatriX. His case was simple and uncomfortable: as AI agents take on delegated decisions, board oversight must move closer to the point where the system acts. That means defined permissions, named human supervision, runtime monitoring, and audit trails that internal audit can actually test. Policy lives in a PDF. Control lives in logs and the right to pull the plug.
Three questions for any board that left inspired:
Where do agents already bind the firm?
Which of those decisions have an owner, limits, live monitoring, and a reconstructable trail?
If the agent is wrong at 2 a.m., who stops it — and how does the board hear before the client does?
Anniversaries measure survival. Advisory boards measure judgement. AI agents will measure whether that judgement can keep up. The CRO’s job is to make sure it does.
