Last Friday, CRO Chief Risk Officer Community supported the Google Hong Kong and Admazes filled the Google office for “Grow Smarter” — a practical session on how SMEs can deploy AI, Google Cloud, Google Ads and MarTech to unlock efficiency and growth. Speakers from Google Ads, OCBC and SmarTone Solutions showed what is now possible when digital tools are used with intent.

Thank you for the organisers Admazes and Google Hong Kong for the beautiful venue. Also the insightful sharing by the keynote speakers - Angel Lam & Loretta Wan (Google), Phoebus Leung (OCBC) and Candice Poon (Smartone Solutions).

Some key talking points from CRO Chief Risk Officer perspectives:

That conversation is necessary. It is not sufficient.

Hong Kong is being told — correctly — that AI can add tens of billions of dollars of economic value if smaller firms close the adoption gap with large companies. What is rarely said in the same breath is this: every AI deployment is also a risk decision. Data leaves the building. Models make judgements that used to sit with people. Vendors become part of the control environment. Marketing automation can scale both revenue and regulatory exposure. A full house on growth with an empty chair on risk is how organisations discover problems after the fact.

This is why Asia And the World still needs more Chief Risk Officer roles — not as a compliance afterthought, but as a C-suite partner who can help the business grow smarter and stay standing.

The missing seat at the growth table

In many Hong Kong and Asian organisations, risk still reports two or three layers below the people who approve new platforms, new campaigns and new vendors. Marketing buys the tool. IT switches it on. Finance signs the invoice. Risk is invited when something breaks.

That operating model made sense when technology changed slowly. It does not make sense when an SME can stand up a generative-AI workflow, connect it to customer data, and run paid media at scale in a matter of weeks. Speed is the point of “Grow Smarter.” Speed without a risk conversation is how you inherit model bias, data leakage, shadow IT, third-party concentration, and advertising or privacy failures that a board will later describe as “obvious in hindsight.”

The CRO’s job is not to slow the room down. The CRO’s job is to make the trade-offs visible so the room can move faster with eyes open.

What “risk smarter” looks like when you deploy AI

A growth conversation about Google Cloud, Google Ads, AI video and smart-office automation should be paired with five questions a competent risk leader will put on the table before — not after — go-live:

1. Data and privacy. What customer, employee or financial data will the model or platform see? Where is it processed and stored? Who has access? Has consent, PDPO and any sector rule actually been mapped, or only assumed?

2. Model and output risk. Who is accountable when AI drafts a customer message, a credit view, a pricing recommendation or a board pack that is wrong? Is there a human-in-the-loop where the consequence is material?

3. Third-party and concentration risk. Cloud, ads and MarTech stacks create dependency. What happens if access is withdrawn, pricing changes, or a vendor incident becomes your incident? Do contracts and exit plans match the operational reality?

4. Cyber and operational resilience. New integrations widen the attack surface. Can the business absorb a disruption, recover, and keep serving customers? Has anyone tested that, or only documented it?

5. Financial quantification. What is the total cost of this risk — controls, insurance, residual loss, opportunity cost of delay — set against the growth case? Decision makers do not need a 40-page register. They need a clear picture of what they are willing to lose to earn what they hope to gain.

None of this is anti-AI. It is how AI becomes a durable advantage instead of a short-lived experiment that ends in a remediation project.
