Living Smarter in the Age of AI

On the evening of 8 October 2026, CRO Chief Risk Officer X The Helena May X The Hong Kong Metropolitan University hosted a fireside chat with Professor Ricky Y.K. Kwok, moderated by Global Risk Advocate Andrew Chan FCA.

The focus was practical: how AI can make daily life easier, and which traps to avoid.

Professor Kwok highlighted real gains in learning (faster synthesis and practice materials), productivity (summaries, drafting, organisation), and everyday decisions—provided AI is used as an assistant rather than a replacement. The value comes from reducing friction so humans can focus on judgment and originality.

He also stressed the risks: over-reliance that weakens critical thinking, hallucinations that require verification, privacy leakage from sharing sensitive information, and the tendency of generative tools to produce generic output. From a risk and governance perspective, these map to familiar issues of accuracy, accountability, and human oversight.

The key takeaway is intentional use. Start with a clear problem, check outputs against known standards, protect sensitive data, and deliberately keep practicing the skills AI can erode. “Living smarter” is less about using more AI and more about using it wisely.

The intimate setting suited the topic. Successful adoption—whether in education, work, or personal life—depends on purpose and judgment, not the newest tool.
